Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand is this week’s book recommendation.
Genre: Biography
Why should you pick it up?
Because this is one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the second world war. This book is about Louis Zamperini an Olympian and a young lieutenant of the United States Army Air Forces who survived a plane crash in the Pacific Theather and as a prisoner of War in three brutal Japanese prisoner-of-war camps.
What I liked about the book is that it tells a true story. And what better kind of story is there, right? The journey from being the kid of Italian immigrants to an Olympian to a lieutenant in the US Army Air Forces in itself is engrossing. But when he survives the ordeal in the PoWs camps in Japan, that truly tells you about his grit and strength. When you read this book and come upon the chapters where Mutsuhiro Watanabe torments him in the PoW camps, you’ll feel his helplessness, his angst, and marvel at how he survived.
I think you should read this book because it is about a man who lived through one of the terrifying times in recent human history, experienced the atrocities himself and lived to tell the tale. Also, because this book focuses on the Pacific Theather when it comes to the Second World War, another fascinating subject if you ask me. And he survived almost 47 days in lost in the sea. Now that is something!
So, if you like non-fiction and biographies, then go for this.

This looks like a good suggestion for my book club! Than you for the interesting review.
Comment number two: I just noticed the name of the author! My book club recently read Laura Hillenbrand’s book, “Sea Biscuit.” She’s an excellent writer and I’d like to read “Unbroken,” with or without the book club.
Nice suggestion. I would like to include it in my book collection.
Sounds gritty and hard hitting Naba; somehow I havent quite taken to the biography format as its too realistic for me.
