Book Recommendation 18 #Reads

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles is this week’s book recommendation.

Genre: Historical Fiction, Literary fiction, Political fiction

Why should you pick it up?

Could you write a book about a man confined in a hotel for years and make it interesting, intriguing even? Well, I don’t know about you but I sure couldn’t.

Yes, this book is about a man, an aristocrat in Russia in the 1920s who is put in a house arrest in a hotel where the story stems from. What got me thinking was the premise and the fact that the author wove an engaging story in a setting so limited if you first think about it. But clearly, he knew what he was doing because I found myself turning page after page, well, tapping on the Kindle to be more precise.

For those who love reading stories set in the Russian society, this is a must-read. It is pregnant with the richness that books on Russia tend to have.

Without giving much away, I leave you with the blurb. That should be enough for readers familiar with Russian History and settings in historical fiction.

Blurb

When, in 1922, he is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the count is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him with a doorway into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

  1. Okay I so love the blurb! You know you, Shalz and Sanch have been spoiling me with book recommendations that my TBR is bursting as is my bookshelf. But, since no one is complaining I’m gonna be picking this one soon 🙂

Inspired by you, I am starting a similar feature on my blog.. It will be a monthly affair, where I share about the book I read in the month. Basically, it’s for me to take up reading seriously!
