Something about the book (from the book’s cover):
With indifferent parents, Iona Sheehan grew up craving devotion and acceptance. From her maternal grandmother, she learned where to find both: a land of lush forests, dazzling lakes, and centuries-old legends.
Ireland.
County Mayo, to be exact. Where her ancestors’ blood and magic have flowed through generations—and where her destiny awaits.
Iona arrives in Ireland with nothing but her Nan’s directions, an unfailingly optimistic attitude, and an innate talent with horses. Not far from the luxurious castle where she is spending a week, she finds her cousins, Branna and Connor O’Dwyer. And since family is family, they invite her into their home and their lives.
When Iona lands a job at the local stables, she meets the owner, Boyle McGrath. Cowboy, pirate, wild tribal horsemen, he’s three of her biggest fantasy weaknesses all in one big, bold package.
Iona realizes that here she can make a home for herself—and live her life as she wants, even if that means falling head over heels for Boyle. But nothing is as it seems. An ancient evil has wound its way around Iona’s family tree and must be defeated. Family and friends will fight with each other and for each other to keep the promise of hope—and love—alive…
Now for my View:
I’m a fan of Nora Roberts and absolutely adore the tales that come from her. Her last book I read was The Witness and it goes without saying that it was brilliant. So you can imagine my joy when Dark Witch ended up in my hands.
Dark Witch is the book one of the cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy. It is the tale of of the O’Dwyer cousins Iona, Conner and Branna as they fight an evil that has threatened their family for hundreds of years. The story begins in the year 1263 when Scorcha, the witch, is shown being tormented by an evil sorcerer, Cabhan who she tries desperately to fight off. He threatens her three children in their dreams which scares her but she binds them and the future generations in blood magic, the power of three to protect them and to defeat evil. Several hunder years later we find Iona Sheehan who is a descendant of Scorcha finding her way back to Mayo County, Ireland. It is there that she finally, in a long time, begins to feel at home and falls for Boyle McGrath. But just as she starts weaving a dream of settling down in this picturesque place she finds herself in a battle against an ancient evil. What happens next? That’s what Dark Witch is about.
Nora Roberts has an immaculate style of writing that keeps you enthralled and engaged. Of-course, that’s not surprising for she is after all a best selling author. Dark Witch too kept me hooked throughout. Needless to say it was un-put-down-able.
I could vividly imagine the setting, the faces of each of the characters, the evil Cabhan even. I loved how Roberts developed the character of Iona, just the kind of protagonist this book needed. While all the characters are absolutely brilliantly sketched; the magic, the Irish settings and the lore also form important dimensions of the book.
Also, I liked the subject a lot. Witches and magic packaged in a story set in the current times; just one of my favorites. I absolutely loved it.
At the end of it all , the integral elements of the book – magic, suspense and characters, are making me itchy to grab the next in the trilogy. I had read several reviews of the book where they have complained that the book is slightly similar to Signs of Seven. Well I guess I have no such complaints as I haven’t read that yet.
So this is my perspective on the Dark Witch and I think it needs to be read to savor Nora Roberts at her best. What are you waiting for? Go grab a copy now!
