Something about the book ( from http://davidbaldacci.com/book/deliver-us-from-evil/):
Evan Waller is a monster. He has built a fortune from his willingness to buy and sell anything…and anyone. In search of new opportunities, Waller has just begun a new business venture, one that could lead to millions of deaths all over the globe.
On his trail is Shaw, the mysterious operative from The Whole Truth, who has tracked Waller to Provence and must prevent him from closing his latest deal. But someone else is pursuing Waller: Reggie Campion, an agent for a secret vigilante group headquartered in a musty old English estate – and she has an agenda of her own.
Hunting the same man and unaware of each other’s mission, Shaw and Reggie will be caught in a deadly duel of nerve and wits.
Now for my View:
Well let me begin the review by asking you a question. What would you think if there was a covert organisation whose only motive was ensuring that every single evil-doer in the world is brought to justice? Say if there was a surviving general from some country who at one point in his life was responsible for genocides. And if there was a clandestine group working to punish him for his crimes without going through the mundane and often ineffective cycle of courtroom justice; wouldn’t you like it? Well I guess I would. David Baldacci’s book incorporates this interesting yet crazy scheme. A vigilante group out to remove every surviving scum from the world or as the title of the novel suggests to Deliver Us From Evil!
The book opens with Reggie Champion, an operative of a secret organisation, ending the life of a long surviving Nazi, probably the last of his kind. It is their sole objective to rid the world of such monsters. To fulfil the same, they move to Provence in Italy towards their next target, a Ukrainian KGB officer Fedir Kuchin who had been living under a false identity for many years. He is now known as Evan Waller and was responsible for the deaths of thousands of people by extreme torture. As Reggie and her team make the plans to outwit this monster; a mysterious operative from an organisation covertly funded by several Governments also moves to Provence. But his target is Evan Waller the human trafficker on the verge of supplying enhanced Uranium to Muslim terrorists. Both Reggie and Shaw are out to get the same men for different reasons. They meet in Provence and there begins their association where one moment they suspect each other, and at the other, they try to ensure the other’s safety from an evil and dangerous man like Evan Walker or Fedir Kuchin. What happens next? Do they get him? Well again you would have to read the book to find out!
Deliver Us From Evil is a great read. A wonderful mix of history, action and great writing; yes that’s what this book is all about. I enjoyed reading it for there was never a dull moment in it. Well alright perhaps at one or two junctures there was a bit of a slack in pace but then the rest of the book made up for it. As I flipped through the pages, I wanted Kuchin dead as badly as Reggie did, that was the beauty of Baldacci’s writing. The plot was something that was remarkable for the bad guy was not the traditional smuggler or murderer but there was a dark history attached to him too. Infact, I really felt that the author had cleverly chosen a plot and done full justice to it. The traditional battle of good versus evil in a contemporary setting but still backed by history, truly fascinating I must say! It is certainly one of those un-put-downable books. Fast paced, interesting, gripping, exciting characters and lots of action; yes the book surely is a page turner.
Do read it and you won’t regret it!
