Do Dreams Mean Something, Anything?

Do you believe that dreams mean something, anything?

Well, if you ask me I’d say maybe I do at times while on others I don’t. Of-course, at most times my dreams don’t really make any sense at all, as I’m sure yours do too or don’t for that matter. Basically, I’m not yet decided on what I believe when it comes to the meaning of dreams.

What kind of dreams do you have while sleeping? Yes, that kind of dream not your aspirations.

In most of my dreams I can’t seem to use my legs and I’ve heard that’s actually a very common phenomenon. But why am I talking about dreams today? Well, I just took a nap and ended up having a not so pleasant dream. So, that’s probably the reason why.
Now, I usually don’t get riled up by most dreams. When I was in school I would often have dreams of not being able to write anything during exams. Yes, no matter how hard I tried, it just seemed impossible. This dream continued even after my student life got over. Perhaps, it signified obstacles in my path, who knows? I’m no dream interpreter. A few years down the line, I now have dreams of not being able to find the right dress for work. Well, I’m not even sure how to read that. So, as you can see my dreams have mostly been about me not being able to do things.
“I believe in everything until it’s disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it’s in your mind. Who’s to say that dreams and nightmares aren’t as real as the here and now?” ― John Lennon
However, there have been occasions when dreams have been more towards the nightmare side of the scale. They have made me anxious and even scared me a fair bit. I remember having a horrible, horrible dream just before my 10th boards. No, it had nothing to do with studies. Let’s just say it had something to do with my mother. And honestly that morning was perhaps one of the worst in terms of the after effects of a dream. I was worried and concerned. And today as well the dream involved her, flash floods and snakes. God! I can’t even begin to tell you how sick I feel right now, so sick from the pit of my stomach. I also know that probably it means nothing but the heart is certainly taking time to bounce back to normality. These nightmares I tell you!
“Nightmares exist outside of logic, and there’s little fun to be had in explanations; they’re antithetical to the poetry of fear.” ― Stephen King
Such is the affect of this nightmare that I have been surfing the net looking for it’s explanation. Now, I don’t have to tell you that has led me nowhere. It’s probably nothing. No, it certainly means nothing. But I’m just a little shaken up. It’s like I’ve watched a movie that has scared me out of my wits. Well, maybe, by writing it here I can move on from that awful dream, or nightmare more appropriately.

So, tell me have you ever felt this way after a dream or a nightmare?

  1. I don't remember a single night when i have not dreamed.
My dreams comprise of many things sad as well as happy even nightmares at times.
What they actually signify is still mysterious for me.
May be some reminiscence of past life or just our internal turmoil or imaginations/thoughts in subconscious mind.

  2. I believe that dreams are the result of our sub conscious mind putting all its knowledge, worries, concerns and thoughts into a basket, shaking it quite a bit and producing a chaotic bunch of scenes. And if you have something deeply buried in your mind, then they take predominance. It has been like that for me, some dreams are around my regrets that I can't let go, some are about those whom I love the most, some are about those grudges which we think we are over with by now but are not.

So if something particular is troubling you in dreams over and over again, best way is to do a self analysis and figure out why your mind is harping on it so much and try to heal yourself in that aspect.

  3. I feel like that every day.
Some days I wake up, feeling tired out, from running away from the nightmares.
But they're all really food for thought. Or a blog post 😉
Trying to find that silver lining somewhere 😉

  4. It's so frustrating that when we are dreaming, the dream makes perfect sense and then when we awake we can't make head nor tail of it. I like to think that the good dreams are messages, the bad ones can just be dropped and forgotten.

  5. the dreams that scare me most is the death of loved one. And I have seen enough of them. The whole I would be paranoid and keep calling and checking on them. It's a horrible feeling.

  6. Perhaps I'm missing something here, but I don't see where any of your posts are related to the A to Z challenge. Are you participating? Please clarify otherwise we will remove your link.

  7. Been a while since I dreamed. Used to have perpetual running from danger dreams all through childhood, interspersed with missing the train ones 🙂

  8. Makes sense Keirthana…I have been wondering why I'm seeing so many dreams on flash floods…strange really…Need to analyse…or maybe just forget about it?

  9. True I guess that happens to all of us…Sometimes I want to continue sleeping and complete a good dream..Will hop over and read your post..

  10. I have had a few nightmare and I can understand how shaken you are now. These google search for dream interpretation leads us nowhere. Anyway calm down, it's just a dream!

  11. Your post reminded me about an important dream I had few days back. I was thinking of posting about it but forgot just like million other things.. Mommyhood takes away sanity of mind 🙁 Dreams intrigues me as well, Naba..

  12. …….. We have Beta, Alpha, Theta and delta stages of sleep. We are almost concious during the first while totally unconscious during the 4th stage. As we start to fall asleep, our memories are randomly put to rest and similarly when we start to awake those are randomly brought back to life. This is the time we dream which in fact is a collection of random mix of memories and most of the time not linked to a long string. During the last two stages we are so unconscious that if we are suddenly awaken, we are completely lost and could cause permanent memory loss. I might be wrong .. but that is what I love to believe! cheers!

  13. The quotations of famous people have highlighted this write-up. You have really written a great one.
As far as dreams are concerned, there are some that we see that do not have any connection at all, while there are some that we see, which we think of a lot during the daytime.

  14. Dreams do make an impact. Specially the nightmares. It happens to me too often. Whenever I have a nightmare related to my loved ones, it keeps nudging me the entire day. It makes me restless. But I guess we should just forget about them. Best way is to talk it out.

  15. Not sure whether dreams mean anything, whether they reflect our anxieties or predict the future. One thing is for sure I feel an emotion much much more strongly in a dream than what I feel in real life.

  16. I used to have pretty bad dreams long back, especially in the afternoons. Hence, I stopped dozing off during the day time, no matter what! And i have felt quite good after that. Probably it's just what we care about, that we fear losing it.

Being religious helps since you feel you have come alone and will go the same.

  17. I have this recurring dream that I have flunked my maths exam. Its been a very very long time since I gave my last maths exam but I still get this dream !

  18. Wow thanks for this…I didn't know…sounds interesting…I'm thinking of getting a book actually on this topic
