No Dream Too Big

There is no dream too big, no destination unreachable if worked at with sincerity. We all have dreams, don’t we? We all wish to accomplish something extraordinary, fulfil that one goal in life. We do it because that makes us happy. But there are only a handful of individuals whose aim includes the happiness and betterment of the society. Dr Ramakant Panda is one such person, someone whose story not only inspires but makes us realise how much our lives can matter if we make the effort.

Hailing from a small village, Dr Panda dreamt of becoming a doctor and started working at it from a very early age. Instead of the school close to his home, he travelled 14 kilometres every day to attend one that was better. After seeing an article about a heart transplant, he decided to become a heart surgeon himself. This was at a time when the country had just one or two hospitals performing heart surgery. This again goes to show how there is no dream too unrealistic. If you want, the sky is yours for the taking. All you need is hope and a plan, like Dr Panda, says.

What’s inspiring about Dr Panda is that having got a chance to continue his practice in the US, he chose to come back. He chose to come back to serve his country. And he did that and wonderfully too. Today he is a highly respected heart surgeon, in fact, the best heart surgeon in the country. He and his team have saved millions of lives and given hope when there wasn’t any. They have even trained and mentored many hospitals from all around the country.

The story of Dr Panda shows how being passionate about what we do can take us to the pinnacle of success. What really struck me about him though is his simplicity and how he stresses on hope for moving the biggest of obstacles. Everything he says makes sense. We can’t be successful if we don’t love what we do. We can’t be successful if we don’t have a dream. We can’t be successful if we don’t have hope and if we don’t give hope. His story actually makes me want to work at my dream.

I’m grateful to the 100 Pipers’ initiative for bringing to the forefront the stories of such inspiring people. The world needs more people like them and we need people to inspire us to greatness.

  1. Hats off to Dr Panda. Travelling 14 kms to school daily is not a simple task.
The best that he has done is training and mentoring others to carry on the work.

  2. He seems like an unusual man. Most of us dream but only a handful manage to follow it through. And to give up your comforts to do something good – that’s truly commendable.

  3. I’ve met him when my brother had his surgery, Naba. He’s a typical surgeon, running a tight ship and brooking no nonsense! Inspiring, indeed.
