Dream Homes For Our Children

Beautiful Homes are but Dream Homes.

Whenever I think of my dream home, I’m magically transported back to my childhood. A wooden cottage with a view of the green valley of Shillong, a thick bamboo forest as the backdrop, a porch lined with flowers, vegetable patches and a garden packed with colours of the rainbow. That was my home. It was where I woke up as a child every single day. That was my dream home, my beautiful home and in many ways, still is. As a child, I couldn’t even imagine living away from nature. But not many children today have that luxury of growing up in such surroundings, do they?

Now that I’m an adult, a mother, I sometimes feel bad that the children of are missing out on the gifts of nature. Well, at least, in the cities. There is just something special about living in a house which is not only made of the four walls but has an external green element to it as well. A couple of days back when I asked my nephew, who is about 5 years old now, about his dream home this is what he said ‘I want a home which has lots of flowers, a yard with a swing and slide. Fruit trees on which I can climb. I want more space to play than is there in the apartment. There are too many cars, the parking is bigger than the playground and we don’t have space to run.’

It hits you, doesn’t it? How we have so many levels of parking in apartments today but very little space for the playground. In fact, even a gym is given more importance than gardens or playing fields. Somehow, even my nephew knew, he was missing something. Somehow, he had more wisdom than adults who planned and purchased apartments.

Ask any child actually and their description of a dream home will be more or less similar. Huge gardens with trees, flowers, and playgrounds; limitless space to grow basically. Their unbridled spirits need to be let loose and living in a spacious community with lots of greens gives them that chance. That is what their hearts want even if they may not articulate it that well.

Today, apartments hardly have enough space and that confines our children within claustrophobic walls. There is hardly enough room to play let alone have gardens where they may spend time. That’s where it’s all wrong. Somewhere between the cost of housing and space, something precious has been traded off, the childhood joy of our children. Maybe that’s why they crave more for open spaces, gardens, and greens. And they should.

Imagine living in the city but not having to compromise on the joys of your child. Gardens, parks, space to play and cycle. How wonderful it would be to give them that, wouldn’t it? How wonderful it would be to give them the house of their dreams.

Before you go, describe your dream home for me, would you?

  1. I grew up in a housing project in New York City. My dream house would have gardens (and a full time gardener, because the gardens would be too big for me to maintain.)

  2. Yes houses these days do not have the green corners that they used to have! My dream home would be my grandma’s place surrounded by lush greenery all around.

  3. Indeed, Naba. We crave for those open spaces in our apartment ruled life. These are now called an amenity, sadly. Your childhood house seems like a dream house. I was imagining it all and wishing for it 🙂
