Sally sat at the dinning table staring at the screen in front of her. Was it really happening she thought?
In the warm July weather she felt a chill run down her spine while her palms were slippery with sweat. What was happening? How could she feel hot and cold at the same time? Maybe it was the letter, the words in them, that stared back at her. Maybe it was the enormity of the situation.
Slowly she scrolled down, reading each line over and over again. In the past 28 years of her life she had never felt the way her heart felt now.
And so gathering every ounce of courage within her, she picked up her cell and dialed the number that was written right at the end of the letter.
Someone answered after the first two rings and Sally felt her lips sealed by an unseen force.
“Hello?” said the voice at the other end.
Taking a deep breath Sally finally spoke. “Heather? Umm…Is…Is that umm Heather?”
As Sally waited for an answer she heard the sound of breathing, heavy breathing, coming from the other end. For a moment she thought it was her.
The woman at the other end finally spoke “Sis…is that you? Sally? That’s you, isn’t it?”
Sally felt a smile come on to her face and spread to the rest of her body.
“Un huh…Yeah… Yeah that’s me? Sis…Oh God!”
And both of them cried and smiled at the same time taking each other’s names over and over again, fumbling and laughing.
Twins sent to two different foster homes after their parents passed away, they knew about each other’s existence but the question was where. It took a lot of searching for them to find each other. But after over two decades fate had eventually brought the two sisters together again.
“Heather” Sally said “There’s a church in Rosewood where we used to to go with Mom and Dad. I have vague memories of that place. I don’t know if you remember. Umm..I was thinking we should meet there. It’s half way between our towns. So…?”
And before she could complete Heather spoke “I’ll be there in 1 hour. Come soon sis!”
“Yeah..Yeah alright” smiled Sally “Drive safe!”
“Sally” said Heather all of a sudden sounding very serious “How will we recognize each other?”
“Haha… Bring a mirror sis!”
And the two of them laughed before hanging up, to drive and finally meet each other.
