The girl in your office with a deceptively innocent smile; who when the boss is around appears to be more concerned about you than anyone else and speaks in a tone so sweet; enough to cause diabetes. The girl who gets all her work done by others but for some reason is still praised for every initiative in office. The girl who speaks foul about you in a manner that she appears the damsel in distress while you are perceived as the devil’s apparent heir. The girl who when the boss isn’t looking does everything in the book that would make you want to strangle her. Yes, ladies and gentlemen this girl is none other than the quintessential ‘Mean Girl’, a sadist.

In an office somewhere in an urban setting, there was a team of girls. Out of the blue one among them was made the Team lead with the remaining others duty-bound henceforth to follow her. Now the one who was given the opportunity to lead on the basis of her ‘performance’ actually didn’t know a thing about the work at hand. Her only strength was that she was really good at flattering her bosses and also an expert at ‘pretending to work’. When the project began, she dumped the entire work load on the others, even those that she as a lead was supposed to do herself.

To those outside the team, she would sulk and complain about how she had to get everything done since the others were good for nothing, which was needless to say completely untrue. With the aid of her sorry face and sympathy gaining ploys, she was able to turn the bosses against the other girls as well. When it was more than the latter could take they retorted back. They were tired of having to work non-stop and still be subjected to their Lead’s unfair schemes. But did it help? In the eyes of the bosses it appeared that the lead was unfairly crucified by the other three. So what could have been done to handle the situation better? What could have been done to deal with a Mean girl such as her?

  3. Yeah this generally happens in most companies and if the bosses are not able to fret out such people then the only way is to create hurdles in the project which only you can clear. I am sure her enactment will come out in open when she is unable to remove the hurdle…..but then in some cases these mean girls are also intelligent…that's when it is a real pain.

  4. It normally happens a lot in the corporate world. People just don't want to work. And to be fair to the mean girl, she tried to take advantages of the situation. In many companies, there is a complete lack of structured performance evaluation and career planning. So people like this mean girl can take advantage.

  6. I heartily agree with you! Not just mean girl, there as mean guys too…handling them is tough. I wonder how ppl with sub ordinary work still shine so bright?

    Some has such a bad attitude, behavior and use english like a broom. yuck..I simply hate such people. And the irony is- they r plenty!
