I for Immoral

“I love you Sophie” said Carl while putting on his clothes. He then extended his hands towards her saying “Come here.”

She rose and walked towards him. Then holding his hands she said “I’ll miss you, you know. When will I see you next?”

“Me too hon!” said Carl kissing her forehead. “I wish I didn’t have to go but I do. You know that?” he continued hugging her tight.

With her eyes closed and her hands hugging him back. sighing she said “Yes”.

They stood there for a moment as if two teenagers in love oblivious to the world. But their reverie was interrupted by a ring on Carl’s phone. Holding Sophie near his chest Carl answered the call reluctantly.

“Carl here” he said “Yes, she’s right here. Hold on a moment” and he handed the phone to Sophie. Holding the phone for a moment too long, Sophie first took a deep breath and then spoke.

“Yes honey” she said “Yes we just finished the meeting. I’l turn on the phone now. See you at home. Bye!”

After hanging up Sophie and Carl looked at each other in silence. It was her husband Mark on the other side. They knew they were in an illicit relationship. Even though they really loved each other it felt immoral.

As if reading each other’s thoughts both of them at the same time broke the silence saying ‘It’s alright! The heart wants what the heart wants!” as they left the hotel of their secret rendezvous to return another day.

  1. Heart wants what the heart wants and what is immoral is immoral. I wish they figure out a way to make it moral 🙂

  2. Very well told story, Nabanita… Immoral yes, indeed- guess they have some choices to make – seems like they were coming back and back to that hotel… Also her husband calling Carl – indicated they all know each other well… Hmm ..

  3. Morality and dilemmas – doesn't it boil down to the choices that individuals make and the consequences they are willing to live with?

  4. Nice narration. They need to come out of the dilemma…It seems husband is aware of the facts as he called Carl looking for her…

  5. The line "the heart wants what the heart wants "….it's so true ….beautifully done again 🙂 Relationships are more about feelings rather than worldly ties ….

  6. Indeed immoral. Mark should know and these two should start a life of their own. Love is not love if it hurts someone.

  7. They should make the husband aware of the situation and not cheat. Sometimes one man's morals may be nothing to the other. Good read by the way.I have often wondered on this issue–is it possible to love two people equally?

  8. I love the narration. I know such things exist. I wish it didn't. One soul ends up getting hurt the most and that is the one who is not cheating.

  9. True, the heart wants what the heart wants, but what is not right is not right either!! The deception should end and in fact it does, sooner or later! The story of our times, well narrated, Nabanita! 🙂

  10. Very true, the heart wants what it wants, even though it is not right….but the truth will come out sooner !! lovely, Naba 🙂

  11. You know what although it sounded immoral, it's their true love. What is wrong is, cheating on their spouses, if their love is true then they should probably get together even if it meant breaking someone's heart no?

  12. An interesting tale of love. Is it love or the case of heart wanting something that doesn't belong to it? Lovely post.

  13. True, the heart wants what the heart wants! However, in all fairness to the spouse(s), they should make some tough choices or keep their hearts under control.

  14. You write so well, Naba.
I'm not judging their morals so much as wondering whether they're setting themselves up for painful consequences. It must be so hard for people to pull of relationships like this, but they do, don't they? And if there are children involved it all gets so much more complicated.

  15. I hate how you are making such an immoral relationship seem beautiful.. How being unfaithful is suddenly sounding magical.
    P.S- AWESOME POST 😀

  16. Immoral relations, come out in the open, no matter how hard they try to keep it under wraps. It's only in the 2nd last para does one get to know about the true nature of their relationship. Nicely put.

  17. So many 'I' words suitable for this story Naba. Immoral, Inevitable, Illicit, Immortal. The many shades of Love. 🙂

  18. Naba you have provided a dfferent perspective here a purity in this type of relatonship! True its the heart thing butwhy people sail in tw boats when they can choose one!!!

  19. Excellent post, catches the ethos of today. Discards all except feelings. Perfectly narrated & exactly what many of us do. Thanks.

  20. And so many people get hurt in the bargain. Is this love or is this lust? Often interchanged.

  21. Suzy has a great point! Sometimes lust is mistaken for love. Quite the quandary, isn't it?

  22. Your post again proves a point that nobody should be judged.. Whats right for me might not be for you and vice versa !!
