This project is dedicated towards effective management of human-elephant conflict (HEC) and protecting the habitats of Asian elephants across six states in India – North Bank landscape in Arunachal Pradesh, Kaziranga and Karbi-Anglong in Assam; Terai Arc landscape in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar; Western Ghats landscape in Tamil Nadu and Kerala and also some parts of northern West Bengal. Both Alexander George Muthoot, Director, The Muthoot Group and Mr. Ravi Singh, Secretary General & CEO, WWF-India have referred to this as a pivotal partnership for the field of conservation.
You may think why is it so important to help protect the homes of Elephants? Well, I’ll tell you why. The exploding population woes of the country is no secret. So if you know this, you would also know that with increasing population comes the need for space. And that’s where humans, like you and me, encroach upon the habitat of animals, in this context elephants. They are left without food and shelter. And the next thing you know is that they are out seeking alternatives in your own backyard. What happens then? Well, millions of dollars worth of loses in agricultural operations because admit it when elephants come looking for food in farms the only thing that happens is destruction. And in some cases there has been loss of human life as well.
I’ll give you an example here. One of the objectives of this association is to bring about a reduction in elephant and human lives lost, crop and property damage in the villages in Tamil Nadu. How? Well, through an Early Warning System which improves the efficiency of the low cost electric fence in the conflict affected villages. So you see it is perhaps to our own advantage to take this issue seriously?
Now that the gravity of the issues is established, let’s shift the focus on what can be done as concerned and responsible citizens in supporting this initiative of Muthoot Group. How armchair activism and social commentary can be channelized to affect change on the ground? Corporates can invest in this as part of their CSR activities just like the Muthoot Group and so can their employees. Young, tech savvy millennials, college students and young professionals can help spread awareness. And the media can back up this voice, broadcast it on their channels or write about it too. The whole society has to shoulder the responsibility. It is only then that such initiatives can succeed. Let’s get together then to help WWF along with the Muthoot Group to mitigate this. Let’s help biodiversity conservation, and awareness-building among local communities in India and around the world so that the elephants don’t lose their homes.
But how can you and I help? Well, where there is will, there’s a way, right? Perhaps by symbolic adoption of Elephants, the contribution going in to the funds helping, well, elephants. Or, by taking part in campaigns to mount pressure on authorities to take this seriously. Avenues could be many.
