N is for Nauseated

“Oh God I hate this company!” cried Sneha pacing angrily as her husband Dheer looked on knowing there was no use stopping her now. It was better that she took it all out.

“Why doesn’t that annoying Scorthy just die?” she literally growled crying.

“We should do this! We should do that! And he should just suck the blood out of all his employees! Oh God this workplace nauseates me Dheer!”

It was then that he walked up to her and hugging her said “Tomorrow you quit my dear”.

And with that she finally quietened down. There was no point working in a place that didn’t value her contributions.

“Good thing you left your job there” quipped Dheer while watching the Saturday news bullient.

“Why?” asked Sneha looking up from her book “What did they do now?”

“Apart from the mandatory working hours, they have released a software that will record the number of hours employees are on the system and what applications they are using”

“Great! why don’t they just program the employees to not live and just work!”

“Haha” laughed Dheer “I think the Indian IT companies will do that very soon due to their lack of respect for employees.”

“And if anyone resigns like Scorthy they will say those who put down their papers were not adding value at all” she said “God he makes me sick! Why can’t he just disappear!”

“Relax” Dheer said “You don’t work there anymore.”

“Yes but I do work in another Indian IT company. They are all the same you know”

“Ahh well that is certainly true!” he said “But hey atleast you are not nauseated anymore!”

Sneha smiled wondering if ever anything will change for employees.

  1. Good thing she got out of that job. Unfortunately it sounds like it is the nature of the beast. Nice story! ♥

  2. Err, my husband works for the same company (I guess) you do, and if I speak one word against its policies, he lashes out at me. 😀 But, I agree with you. Some companies have such weird policies. Thankfully, I loved my previous company. 🙂

  3. Eeks…that software sounds rubbish !! a certain amount of control is necessary, but that doesn't mean they should start treating the employees like slaves !! For them, we're just workers, not individuals who have talent in them 🙂
Good that she broke out of it ; at least she got some respite !

  4. Hehehe the same old IT trauma. It will never change I know.

I have been an IT machine for six years now, and things are still the same 😀

    Sigh!

  5. Ok, I know where this is coming from and I completely agree and you know what I quit too! yay! and the sad part is I will be joining another software company where things will be same. Let's wait another 10-15 years dear, then we can retire peacefully and spend all our time reading and writing 🙂

  6. The IT industry itself is like that. Esp the services ones. They have to stay in the front and for that they go to extremes. They pay well and extract well.

  7. Suffocating! I know how jobs and companies can do that to you. Though the tale is fictional, it is the truth for many I know.

  8. After reading your post and most of the comments so far, I have just this to say: if a person thinks her/his job is nauseating, (s)he can quit and take up another job in another company.

If the IT sector is so bad, why don't people in the IT sector join some other sector?

  9. I am happy that the person quit the job ! we cannot change any one in this world. The only thing that we can do is to respond to what we were created for … and do the job that can keep us happy, or create one for ourselves ! no point living at the mercy of somebody, at the cost of losing one's identity ! thanks for sharing !

  10. Haha I can sense the anger and nausea in each word. Yep it is tough u know. Every place has its own issues. It is US who have to change to be able to bear it
    🙂 good one

  11. I completely agree. I quit IT for similar reasons last year.. Just that I decided to take a break from working entirely 🙂

  12. Nice one Naba. Lucky she got out though so many places treat their employees the same . Very sad situation 🙁

  13. Would be really nauseating to work in such a company. I like my freedom when I am working. Even a simple rule like spending these many hours inside the office use to kill me in my last job.

  14. Never worked at a place like this so can't really say how it would feel. But having heard similar stories from many people in various types of workplaces in corporate sector – Indian or otherwise, IT or others – I have come to a conclusion that "Employees First" has to be the mantra of any responsible company. Unless they can keep their employees happy and fulfilled, they can't meet their company's goals or be worth anything. Maybe for some time they will get by through their exploitative policies, but they can't sustain in the long run if their employees aren't satisfied and happy to work there.

  15. I have been fortunate enough to work in places that have respected me. Then again, I was never in IT. So, this is probably more true in the corporate workforce. Good one, Naba.

  16. I feel like suing such IT co's! My husband works in one such….no work-life balance at all! I hardly get to see him on weekdays!

  17. Makes me think what will happen when I will finally enter the Indian IT Industry next year!!

  18. I am so happy I am not working for one now… It sucked the life out of me. This is a sad story of every company.

  19. Sadly, this type of work environment is everywhere and not confined to India or the IT industry.
