When Janaki asked me to write a guest post for her I of-course agreed. How could I not? It was through Indiblogeswaris that I first got to know about her. We even met last year in Bangalore. She has this warm aura around her. And you cannot help but be charmed by her intoxicating smile.
I didn’t know what to write though, for her blog is immensely popular and I didn’t want to pen down something unworthy of her sacred space. So I sat with ‘Memoirs of A Homemaker‘ for hours trying to think of something but couldn’t. That’s when I realized that I just need to start writing what comes to my mind and I guess that’s what I did. Hope it does justice to her wonderful blog.
Thank You Janaki for hosting me.
Woman Perceived
Do you often wonder about the prejudice against women which is so rampant in India? How women are pigeonholed blatantly? I do. But honestly I haven’t yet found the reason behind the predisposition. Though I do know that certain aspects of our lives still abet this decay further.
But why am I suddenly writing about this today? Well it so happened that I walked into the alcohol section of a super market this afternoon to pick up a bottle of wine, alone. Though not surprising really but all along I was followed by accusatory glances. It made me realize something. My walking in and scouting bottles of wine unflinchingly was sacrilege for those who hold a particular notion of ‘Good Indian Women’. The reason for those spiteful glances ,in my view, was that a woman was out buying alcohol, something which is not particularly sanctioned by our ‘(pseudo)rich culture’.

Thanks so much Pratikshya … 🙂
Well there is actually no real reason for the prejudice except narrow minded view of us Indians. Ignore and do as you please 🙂
Ya I guess that's the only way to go about life! 🙂
I was planning to write a Post on how we love judging people. Sunanda Pushkar has inspired so many ideas to me…
With all due Respect to our women,
*
Imitating western girls is all about you scale the prejudice. You wanna go out at near closing time to buy a Bottle of Wine; You wanna visit a medical store to buy cons for ur husbands after bargaining; You are working with us (men) everywhere around the India …and you wanna fly fighter jets, wanna sit in the cage of a tank to blow the paki army or chinese; you wanna be para trooper; wanna go kaiyaking, wanna play rugby and ice hockey …of course you are capable of doing everything what men do.
But, as an Indian Man I would say do what u want, nobody would come to stop you, but in that case, the only thing we would like you to stay away from is being a mother.
Or atleast stop asking us to help you in terms of making u a mother.
In India, prejudice is the name u gave to a phenonmena- for we indian men are too protective for our mothers, sisters, wives and its not prejudice if you are asked to sit infront of tv with ur AK47 (the tv remote) and enjoy Bigg Boss kindda stupid stuff and let us go out to buy a bottle of Red Wine or Vodka for u to drink and hit our heads with ur AK47.
Sad na how she was judged and even after death she has no respite!
that's a very well written piece, Nabanita!
our hypocrite Indian society needs to know it!
Thanks Aayesha…and you are right our society needs to know it!
