10 Reasons Why I Dislike Rains

Rains.

Remember the poem Rain Rain Go Away? Well, I have literally been reciting that for the past two weeks now because to tell you the truth, I really dislike rains especially when it is incessant and lasts for week after week.

Why?

If you live in Bangalore then you’ll know what I mean.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the allure of petrichor and the romance surrounding rains but there is only so much I can take of piling laundry. Yes, laundry which can’t be done because the previous batch hasn’t even dried yet. If you visit my home, then you’ll see clothes drying everywhere but not really drying at all. And all of this makes me want to catch hold of the weather Gods and beg them to direct this rain led damp weather to some other corner of the world where it might actually be needed.

So, today troubled by piling laundry and partially dried, still wet and smelly clothes, I’m going to give you 10 reasons on why it’s okay to occasionally dislike rains. Don’t blame me, it’s the hypnotising odour of semi-dried clothes that’s making me do this! The rain feels like my spurned lover out to annoy every bit of sanity out of me.

So, here goes.

Why I’m not so fond of rain these days and I’m sure you are not either if you live in my city that is…

Why I Dislike Rains…

  1. You need to find a place in your purse or bag to keep your wet umbrella. You can’t possibly like doing that.
  2. If you walk to the office, school or college, chances are you need to pass through waterlogged roads in horrible conditions. There is dirt and wet mud all around that travels from your shoes to your home.
  3. The potholes multiply like a bout of smallpox out to cover every inch of the road which makes driving around the city a nightmare.
  4. Clothes don’t dry as quickly as they should.
  5. The balcony is covered with clothes which are tired of hanging, waiting for that elusive sunshine, choking for want of fresh air and freedom from the suffocating pile of clothes.
  6. A room or two at home is again full of semi-dried clothes, lying with arms and legs stretched, at the mercy of ceiling fans to dry.
  7. The house smells of clothes that are on the verge of a water-soaked death.
  8. Traffic! You can’t possibly live in Bangalore and not hate rains for the traffic jams it causes.
  9. Power cuts which magically creep into the daily schedule every time it rains as though the electricity board here is only capable of providing power under clear skies!
  10. The autos and cabs extort money from you knowing full well how hard it is to get either when it rains.

Well, those were some of the reasons I could think of. And, honestly, if the sun isn’t out soon enough I’m sure I’ll come up with more.

So, rain, if you are reading this, please go away!

And you, yes you who had the astounding patience to read through my rain-soaked complaints, do tell me if you love the rains?

No, wait. Let me rephrase.

Would you still love the rains if it poured incessantly for over 2 weeks?

  1. I think you nailed it with the preciseness of your last question. While I would enjoy the odd rain and cold weather it brings (as opposed to Kerala's mad summer heat), incessant rain is an entirely different story and as you point out, a major nuisance after awhile in all aspects, be it traffic, power cuts or damp rooms

  2. I agree incessant rains are really a paIn. Today I just had to go out and it rained but I too get crabby when it rains all day long. In Mumbai we also have to worry about the floods!!! And the water that cars splash on you when they drive past, cars getting stuck in the rain and not to mention stepping into open gutters or manholes . Yuck ! Walking on rain drenched roads in Mumbai is disgusting with rubbish gushing down…..

  3. I know Nabanita, since I live in the same city as you and am as bugged with the rain gods for directing every bit of gloominess this way! I hate the grey skies and the damp, musty smell from the rooms and my sanity seems to be at stake with the ever-piling laundry and clothes that are refusing to dry over the past couple of days! Not to mention the stink on the roads as the garbage mounds keep rising! I am waiting for the Sun to come out and stay for a while…desperately need it!

  4. Your post brought back SO many memories of the city where I used to live, which experienced a tremendous amount of rainfall, pretty much from autumn to springtime. I got so tired of it that I moved! 😉 Hope your city dries out soon.

  5. I hear you, Nabanita and can relate to each and every point you have mentioned. I hate rains for the same reasons too. Send the rains from your place to our desert state, we can do with SOME rains , though not incessant rains like Bangalore, pls! 😀

  6. I'm not a fan of rain and can imagine how depressing two solid weeks of it must be! While we do get our fair share here, it's those sunny days in between that keep me cheerful. Rain makes mud and that doesn't mix well with dogs. Too much cleanup!

  7. I am sailing in the same boat as you. I absolutely hate these non-stop rains. Please, I need my sun. Looks like today will be a nice day. Fingers crossed. 🙂

  8. I hear you girl…the last few days have been nightmarish….not to mention the wifi that conked off thanks to the rain (Pole had falled :()

  9. oh I wish I could Shilpa 🙂 it is a relatively good day today though with the sunshine and all..so keeping fingers crossed that it stays !

  10. oh yes Roshan…occasional rains alternating with sunshine filled days is always welcome but not incessant rains ..sigh!

  11. hahah a – I feel the same about rain. Unless you're a teenager with no responsibilities and only romance on the brain, rain is certain to bring a sigh and many worries of the kind listed above.

  12. I love when it rains but over two weeks here is driving me crazy. Add to it the overcharging auto guys, the water splashing zooming cars, the slight headache cos of the sudden cold and a sore back :/
Thank Weather Gods, it was all day sunny today 🙂

  13. My mom, she curses rain when it starts downpour . She raises all the points you just wrote down and says its a luxury she can't afford. But me, I love heavy rain and thunder.

  14. I've been hearing of the Bangalore rains. You know London is known for its unpredictable weather and the rains! I completely understand your woes.

  15. Oh.. but I love rain.. both my children were born during the rainy season so I know how difficult it was to dry clothes. We used to even iron them. But being in Mumbai, other than summer, rain is the only season we have.

  16. haha you put it so well Kaplanaa .I agree, unless you are a teenager it's hard to see the romance of rain all the time 🙂

  17. Oh yes Parul and today as well… It is supposed to be sunny all the way till Saturday this week..Fingers crossed 🙂

  18. Oh I wish I could love the rain too..Maybe if summers were too hard here , I would value rain as much as you do Lata 🙂
And yes we have been ironing clothes to dry them too !

  19. Maybe I haven't really experienced the worst of worst rains but I can never quite say I dislike rains 🙁 It can always turn around my mood! And who cares about smelly clothes, kya hi fayda 😀 Our faces work their magics anyways 😛

    Richa

  20. haha..well that's true we do have such faces , don't we? 😀
And I hope you never experience such incessant and irritating rains, wouldn't want you to dislike rains !

  21. I can think of a few more:
The temperature becomes so cold I don't get out of bed on time
    It's so cold I can't swim
I have to wait under a narrow awning till the rain stops when I am outdoors
The lack of sunshine gives me the gloomies
    The ceiling leaks
The damp patches grow bigger on the walls
I could go on and on….
    Rakhee

  22. Usually people love rains but you gave 10 reasons why you don't like it. haha amazing. Interesting post. I still love rains may be because I don't have to wash clothes or drive in traffic.
