Does Maharashtra need Raj Thackeray?

My post on www.newsyaps.com

Mr Raj Shrikant Thackeray, the Self-styled Messiah of the Marathi Manoos, is known to have moved to the upper echelons of power in the state of Maharashtra by virtue of his blatant political ideology of Regionalism. The cosmopolitan image of Mumbai, the commercial capital of India, has without a doubt been tainted by the man for whom Nationalism is just a sham.
What made him so powerful to enable him to rule the roost in the affairs of the state? Is his style of politics conducive to the health of Maharashtra or the nation as a whole? Infact, does Maharashtra really need him to march ahead towards greater prosperity?
India is a democracy is it not? We as citizens of this great nation have every right to settle and work in any corner of the country as we dim fit. Who gives Raj Thackeray the right to use his hooliganism and sub standard sub-nationalism to prevent this? Unfortunately the vote bank politics and the absolute degradation of morals, ethics and ideology in the corridors of power have resulted in politicians like him thriving irrespective of ample charges against them.

  1. I am not that well versed with the politics of Mumbai but at times I just feel that maybe a decade or so back there was a time when Mumbai had all praise for Raj Thakeray. Something down the line changed, be it the family divisions or the thinking of the party. I could be wrong.

  2. Unity in diversity is what we say about India. But sadly people like Raj Thackeray are hell bent on ruining the reputation of the country.

  3. Really well-written 🙂 I guess cricket is the only topic you don't write about 🙂

It is something inherent in the Thackeray lineage; the spewing of hate and Maharashtra only for Marathis ideology. In the early seventies Bal Thackeray started an anti-Tamil campaign my uncle recollects turbulent times when he would wear the white-topi and travel.

As the ideom goes the apple does not fall far away from the tree and it is at times like these when I wish I was like Jason Bourne with a sniper in hand hunting out boisterous bull-shit spewing idiots like Raj & co. I would use the same sniper to hunt down all the terorists and politicians enjoying their stay in the jail 🙂

But then wishes remain wishes 🙁

  5. Well If I had a magic want I would make this wish of your's come true or better yet I would just make them disappear into thin air! 🙂

    Thanks !

  6. Actually I used to write about cricket a lot during my school days..but yes don't find myself doing so now…not sure why !

  7. while Raj is surely a name of true politician of modern times (group of Indians who believe in making money becoming social leaders), there is no denying Nabanita , that its we, the people, who made Gandhi & its we who made Anna & Raj (& so many like him). There are people who see the true leader in him because even they are opportunists.Secular mindset is fiction in India.Today, if people fight in the name of state, region, caste , colour, religion & other classifications, it is because of their own lack of understanding. Politicians just capitalize on the situation .If we blame Raj and similar people today it would be a behaviour similar to America(it was America who gave birth to terrorists & today it criticizes and attacks them to death because they are no more under its control )

  8. ONly if these people knew the real history of Marathas in 17-19th century when they were paying pensions to so called 'Mughal emperors' in Delhi.I bet they don't know a single thing about roles Marathas played in Indian fight for independence either. Raj doesn't hold a single candle to real mighty Marathas

  9. well written!!

For the question "Who gives him the right", the answer might well be that a pack of junior retards whose "aamchi Maharashtra" slogan means nothing better than a fake shield to guide their incompetence..

    Cheers!

  10. Well said Naba , Even many Marathi people do not support his ideology and even people who support this are losers in the vote bank politics because they are split between Shivsena and MNS. Anyway such acts are not tolerable to any extent.

  11. Regional chauvinism has been prevalent all over India at one time or other since independence. In Maharashtra it is very dominant today, which makes me feel India is still not one country with one dominant ideology. This has been one of the greatest failure of Indian intellectuals who have been unable to project one ideology encompassing the diversities of India.
