Good script means nothing for Indian cinema

My post on newsyaps.com

From ‘Raja Harishchandra’ made by ‘Dadasaheb Phalke’ in the year 1913 to ‘Student Of the Year’ by ‘Karan Johar’ this year, the Indian Film Industry has indeed come a long way. Bollywood as it is popularly called is known for producing more films than any other Cinema Industry on this planet. But does that give credence to the Cinematic Brilliance that it is supposed to have garnered by virtue of its century long existence? Certainly not; perhaps sometimes but definitely not always!
Movies like Ready, Bodyguard or SOTY makes us wonder if producing movies in India is just a big hoax. The audience in essence spends hundreds of rupees to merely sit through a torturous script being played out for three long hours. Are quality and originality long forgotten concepts in Bollywood? Every Friday Recycled and unbearable movies are released, some even raking in incredible volumes of moolah at the box office.
There was a time when scripts were the souls of movies. Anand, Masoom, Abhimaan are just a few names that come to our mind when we think of meaningful movies with even better acting by the cast. Is good cinema now a thing of the past? Has the saturation point of creativity been reached such that movies are now merely a rash mix of songs, dialogues, and abrasive comedy and fight sequences!

  1. Agree. And this is the reason why I go to theatre only for masterpieces. By master pieces, I dont mean movies to which dumb people go in flocks, keep their mouths open whenever their favourite hero or heroine are on screen and come out feeling even more dumber.

  2. There was a golden era of Indian cinema during the times of Satyajit ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen, where scripts were leaked and made in Hollywood, ("E.T" by Speilberg). From then to now,the Indian film industry have transformed from making cinema to manufacturing cinema. Scripts like Dabbang, Ready, Bodygaurd, SOTY, Jab Tak Hain Jaan and plenty of the lot are manufactured by a group of writers with the age old masala and star cast. The only genre of such movies I can think about is either Sci fi or Nonsense coz they are so unrealistic. 😛

  3. The producers and directors feed what the hungry public wants. And these movies satiate the appetite of vast majority of the public and since profitability is the main intention of making films, script comes last; major focus is on marketing these days and content is forgotten.
Good scripts are nowadays an exception rather than a rule.

  4. haha… I haven't seen any worse pretentious post…what do you mean by hoax exactly…enlighten your unfortunate readers

  5. Many times I feel like watching a good movie to really realx. But unfortunately there is none these days. Even the media hyped ones are really bad. And I get back to watching TV. Again such nauseating and repetitive stuff there! Now I find the best option is to take a long relaxing walk! Good for health!! Don't you agree Nabanita??

  6. Worst KJ movie ever SOTY, Creativity can never reach saturation point, It is the Industry which is saturated only big banner, big actors and big unit movies are marketed well. Until or unless the audience create a standard for good movies like in the Kerala industry or Hollywood these kind of Sh*tty movies will be release every weekend.

  7. I have said everything I had to in the post….I think that is enough for my "unfortunate readers" 🙂
