The fashion of Sari will last forever

My post for www.newsyaps.com
Remember the very first saree you bought for your daughter? Or, recall the very first one in your wardrobe? The first saree your husband gifted you or the wedding saree that you so carefully have kept in the favorite corner of your closet? Yes, no woman ever forgets the feeling of the first saree or the happiness and the excitement of wearing saree for the first time for any function. The wedding of a close relative, the farewell at school or even just draping your mother’s saree; yes those moments are precious and the photographs of those adorn your album throughout your life. Indeed the saree is special and has always been for generations. In many ways, Saree is and has been for thousands of years the essence of Indian Culture in terms of garments.
What comes to your mind when you think of an Indian woman dressed in traditional wear- a beautiful lady dressed in saree I am sure. Yes, saree is the six yard of cloth that has defined the way women in the Indian subcontinent have dressed for hundreds of years. Saree is usually worn over a blouse and petticoat and put on in all across the country from north to south and east to west. In India; sarees are worn on family functions, marriages and festivals apart from day to day life.

  1. Saree is good for the ladies, selectively "to show and not to show" told me by one of my university classmate long time back. Unfortunately i lost contact with her. We enjoyed life without SMS, FB in those days.

  2. I love wearing sari, but occassionally.wrapping up is a task in itself,it's high time these big brands launch their wrap around sari with tuck ins and stitches 🙂

  3. I like wearing sari whereas today's modest era hardly people prefer wearing sari at occassions. But the fashion of saris would never end until there are style divas like Rekha and Vidhya Balan

  4. Beautiful post -it resonates with me….my first saree was when i used to wrap around my mother's saree as a kid…What days !

  5. During my recent travels in search of the elusive original sarees, every single village that made such beautiful stuff has disappeared. The original Ilkal or Jamdani, the Dharmavaram or the Ikkat! Even the old families do not produce the original stuff any more. No woman knows today why they wear a green, red or other colors saree, nor do their mothers or grand mothers know. What is the significance of the various motifs that are there? I visited Jogjakarta, Indonesia recently and met the 7th generation printer of such original stuff and admired how they still continue to make that. I certainly wish there are women here in India who would continue to wear original stuff and know what they are wearing it for! Those who can afford a Rolex watch can also afford an original Patan Patola, but do they buy that? Sad story there!

  6. Really well-written 🙂 The saree in a way is what defines an Indian woman – beautiful, elusive, confident and smart!

  7. To a large extent, I believe it is an Art. Especially when women wear it to work. A lot of us have grown up seeing our mom's / aunts in Saris (against the standard Kurta's / Jeans of today), but at some point… This too will be history, a tradition / culture lost, or in a minority..

  8. Though sari looks elegant, isn't it a bit too inconvenient? I always feel pity for those women whom I see in trains and other such places trying to handle their sari!

  9. That is an in-depth and great analysis Krishna and its sad indeed…I wish we all realize the charm of a saree and carry the legacy forward..!

  10. Saree is suited for Indian Ladies because their figure does not suit other dresses especially as they grow older and have children. The beauty of saree is one looks graceful

  11. I think Indian women look good in all kinds of attires..the only problem is we as a society don't accept a heavily built Indian Woman in a dress but will gladly welcome an overweight and aged foreigner in the same…

  12. You have really penned it beautifully just like a beautiful saree. Saree is eternal & not mortal. It would always be there in fashion & would always be loved.

  14. I actually beg to differ … Actually the problem is we as a society think that Indian women after a certain age don't look good in anything but a saree but will gladly welcome an overweight and aged foreigner in the same…

  15. Saris have been in fashion for thousands of years in India. They are made using an unstitched piece of fabric draped around the body to flatter a woman's figure. Every women looks beautiful in saree.
