Why I Don’t Like Road Trips…

The other day S was telling me about this couple who went on a road trip from Bangalore to Bhutan. Do you know what my reaction was? Well, why on earth would they even want to do that? Haven’t they heard of this thing called air travel? And who is their employer for it looks like they have a lot of vacation days! Okay! That’s unfair. It’s a free country and if some people have all the time in the world to be on the road, week after week, then who am I to judge? To each their own. But I for one can never really see the charm in that, not today, not anytime in the future. Yes, well I’ve always been an old woman in a young person’s body. Hence, the reason for my reaction.

But looks like I’m the odd one out here. From what I hear, there is another couple who just hitchhiked all the way from Bulgaria to India. That’s a whole different level of crazy altogether, admittedly just in my book. I guess I’m the quintessential couch potato and naturally the road trip Grinch! Yes, I admit it.

In fact, you want to know a secret? If I was into it, S wouldn’t mind road trips at all. Yes, I’m such a killjoy when it comes to those that he has eventually made peace with this side of me.

Do you like road trips?

© Random Thoughts Naba

Well, as you would have inferred by now I’m not particularly fond of them and I’m here to tell you why.

•  When I could travel by air, why would I want to go on road trips? So tiring and not to mention time consuming.

•  Why not save all the vacation days for the destination?

•  Staying at home is much better than sleeping in the car or in motels!

•  If I wanted to see the scenery, I could do it by making a central location my base.

•  Staying in hotels on highways is not really my idea of fun.

• Sitting by the side of the road, sipping tea and looking at the natural wonders doesn’t really excite me as much as staying indoors.

• I can’t freshen up in the sort of places usually available on road trips.

• I can’t stay in the hotels along the way.

• I get car sick, if there is such a thing.

• I’m just a boring and lazy person. This is probably the biggest reason of all.

So, no road trips for me please!

Well, that’s all I have for you today. Until next time.

Ciao.

Before you go, tell me which side are you on – road trips or no road trips? I’m all ears.

PS: No offence meant to all those who love road trips.

  1. I like road trips for one reason only- I can plan my travel to my convenience. We don't have to rush to the airport or the train station to catch that flight/ train on time. And we can always extend a stay at a hotel or cut it short based on how we like it. That being said, I do like the convenience of air travel in terms of travel time. But there is a charm to road trips that doesn't quite match up to anything else. You should try it soon and hey I get car sick too, so don't worry, I'll give you tips 🙂

  2. I've done one road trip that spanned across a week and we explored parts of Rajasthan and loved every second of it! 🙂 Maybe you can do just a weekend trip by road and it'll change your mind! 😉

  3. I like road trips. In fact, we do them so frequently, both for work and pleasure. I like the convenience of road trips. You can start any time and break the journey as many times as you like and also can stop to eat at a good place or enjoy the view or stop to shop if something on the way catches your fancy.

  4. Woah! Right, didn't see that coming. I like 'some' road trips. Some journeys are much about the travel as much as it is about the destination. I mean, a roadtrip across Europe would be awesome. But yes, it depends on a lot of factors – weather, company, time etc. So it really depends on the destination.
In India, no, I'm not particularly fond of road trips. Most of the time because we don't have 'roads' 😛

  5. You're free to travel by air but I love road trips – especially ones where your plans go awry. Those really test your imagination, patience and ability to get back on track!

  6. Road trips can be good to enjoy the scenic beauty around and I don't mind taking short road trips every now and then, well long trips can be tiring … interesting post !

  7. In India, I don't enjoy road trips. The quality of roads, no clean restrooms, traffic, all get my goat. The only good part is that one can travel at one's whims and fancies and not go by schedules. It definitely helps with kids and one can take a lot of luggage too. 🙂 We've taken road trips to Kerala and many destinations in TN and Karnataka because it was easier to take the car. So, I guess, I like some, I dislike some others.

  8. Aw Naba you seem to be in a minority here and I wish I could side with you but nope – I completely adore road trips. It's just so much fun provided you choose the right weather. If I could get to S I'd tell him to push just a few times. I think you'd get to like them. Unless that car sickness gets you down. That can be a pain.

  9. I do like road trips provided the roads are good and the weather is beautiful! But I hate long road trips and the over night ones. I like road trips that end in like 8-10 hours and knowing that there is a cozy bed out there for me soon. I hate sleeping in cars and yes carsickness is a thing! I have it too!

The AC in a car gives me severe headache and I refuse to travel unless it is switched off and I have the windows pulled down.

  10. Did you know a family from Bangalore is on a road trip currently to Paris? They are a family of 4 and with two children, they are going awesome.
I like the way I get to plan road trips, sitting with a map and pen and checking off places that we cross. Yes, I like to do that. But I also don't enjoy the long road trips – my back hurts and I wish I had a trailer/caravan sorts to go on a road trip. Ambitious, isn't it?

  11. Hehe oh Shailaja if only I could overcome my laziness and desire for comfort at all times…I can somehow manage short road trips but not the long ones…I wish I did because S would surely love it!

  12. I can somehow manage short road trips Aditi but one like from Bangalore to Bhutan, no never 😀 I know I'm strange na?

  13. From the looks of it, I'm the odd one out Shilpa…I guess it's my laziness more than anything that stops me from it!

  14. Oh as hypocritical as I might sound I guess I wouldn't mind trying a road trip in Europe but definitely not in India! 😀

  15. Oh with kids I guess it makes sense…yes, nearby locations of course we need to make them road trips..For me 3 to 4 hours of road trip is still tolerable but more than than I get cranky and don't quite enjoy much!

  16. hehe that's okay Tulika I knew I'll be on minority while I was writing it!

S gets excited at the mention of road trip , he wouldn't mind pushing me more I guess 😀

  17. Oh atleast someone agrees to few of my points! 😀 the AC gives me vomiting sensation, unbearable!

  18. Oh yes I read about that… Certainly takes a lot of meticulous planning and yes quite something I must say!

  19. I am okay with road trips and any trips as I love travelling.
Road trips are time-consuming & tough to squeeze in time when we have limited vacation-days.
You have some valid reasons here, Naba!

  20. Thanks Anita 🙂 I know I'm the odd one out 😀 the reluctant traveler & a road trip Grinch , quite the combination na?

  21. Road trips sound fun to me, provided I have equally good company to get me going. They're adventurous, they're fun, but as long as they within 10 hours of time.. beyond that, it starts irritating me..

I love the way you mention things about yourself Naba..

    Cheers

  22. I can't get enough of them, road trips.

But I see you have valid reasons to just stay home. 🙂

  23. Life is a journey. We often miss enjoying the journey while striving to reach our destination. Enjoy the journey till it lasts.

Road trips can also be a process of self-discovery. And with your "significant other" half in tow, the enjoyment can be manifold. Since 2012, when I quit my corporate life, I have been driving the length and breadth of this country. Every 100 kms or so, there is a different terrain, different culture. It just needs a life time to explore our beautiful country.

  24. When you say it like that a part of me wishes I loved road trips as much…I do like trips, but I'm just not cut out for enjoying the journey as much as the destination I guess…

  25. Well we take a lot of road trips, and I don't really mind them here in US. However, in India I used HATE them, for all the same reasons you mentioned. Thankfully most of those things don't apply here. But I would still choose to fly the longer distances, as I think they are a colossal waste of time in that case.

  26. Last christmas I was on road for 8 days, so you can imagine I absolutely love being on road and … and I now have this itch to take you with me 😛 hehehehe
There's no problem in enjoying a quite comfortable vacation but I feel road trips are way more exciting… even the bad and scary ones 😀
