Working women should remember that safety comes first

My post for: www.newsyaps.com

For a moment just recall the weird stares while you walked passed a group of men in a deserted street while on the way back from work or the scary cabbie or the uncomfortable male colleague who makes it a point to shadow you everywhere inspite of your lack of interest? Yes the feeling is familiar and we women have faced such situations over and over again wherever we go. This is just the kind of society we live in and hence it becomes imperative that such nuisances do not cross beyond a point where it threatens our own wellbeing.

We need not be reminded of the heinous crimes that are committed against women; those that manage to be reported show us the level of danger that lurks behind the shadow of this so called sophisticated and educated society. Infact, just glance through your newspapers and you would surely find one or the other article of some unthinkable horror that has taken place in some part of the world with the victim being a woman!

  1. the past few days of my life has been a lot about thinking, contemplating, writing, talking about the hardships and unacceptable acts that women are victim to.

So, other than having hope that us men change and let the change into them, women must stay as much careful and cautious as they can.

I sometimes think of extremes, like bringing a self-defense trainee to our college and give out some lesson on self-defense for women. But i am hardly capable of that and i hardly have the resources and proper 'backing' for that.

can't say much, women should be strong(they are, but…)..

    maybe,
you'll enjoying reading these two posts of mine, if you don't mind.

Your posts actually give me hope and make me a little more calm. keep writing! 🙂

  2. i want to add one more thing. the first hurdle, and the hardest of the two for 'the change' is that us men must come to accept that 'we indeed are exploiting our mother gender'. once that goes into heads and locks itself there, the only other hurdle is to, i don't know, 'right the wrong'?

  3. So very true Naba, in these days its so very important to stay aware and stay alert. Unfortunately, because of the blatant ongoing mockery of the law and order departments, the onus to stay safe does shift to a large extent to our shoulders. I had published a set of Dos and Dont's of a similar sort a while back. Do take a read here.

  4. Mentally Women are much stronger than men.

And physically, they are capable of defending themselves. When I was in Finland, then first thing that I noticed was that and lady officer body frisked me in the airport. The body language makes all the difference. Just compare our lady officers in the airport and you will know that the difference is in the lack of training. The lady officer in Finland was conducting herself well and any rowdy will know that this lady means business and will not mess around with her even when this lady is not in duty and in plain clothes.

Our womenfolk need lot of training not only to defend themselves, but also to convey an impression of "don't mess with me"

  5. First visit to your blog and I am glad to read about this topic…:) You have mentioned some very important pionts like taking off company ID cards or not speaking on phone or glued to one's laptop. I feel self defence is the best way to defend oneself. Atleast a basic course on Karate or on any other self defence should be made mandatory at school. This would surely help a lot.

The mentality of us, the men must change if things have to move in a better direction. A worthy read and some really important points to make note of.

  6. well precaution is always better than cure.. there are a lot of things that can be done .. and formost is SUCH men need to be SHOT..

it is definitely a big big issue around safety and all and It makes me say sorry and feel ashamed of calling my self a MAN is this is what MEN do ..

  7. Hi… am here for the first time, and so glad I'm here!! Working women have both an advantage and a disdvantage with respect to the crap happening all around. The disadvantage is obvious – working women are out of their homes for a longer period; they tend to have odd travel hours too. But the advantage is more subtle – working women are definitely more aware of all possible dangers, and, while erring on the side of paranoia, they would still be a better prepared.
Having said that, here is something I've scribbled out on WHY our society actually makes monsters of men : http://www.lafemmenirvana.blogspot.in/2012/07/why-this-guwahati-di.html

  8. Very true, Nabanita!

While women must definitely be concerned about safety, this heartless world doesn't appear to be. The corporate world, until recently, ensured women followed grueling schedules. They seem to have become a little aware recently.

And us men; we seem to forget even our mothers and sisters are women. Caring for your safety and respecting you should be our first duty…

All the best… You take care…

  9. The responsibility lies on the employer ,if women is returning home night shift. The employer should ensure security in their premises also.Every one has take certain precautions while traveling alone specially night in sensitive and potential areas, none can ensure zero tolerance to crime. We can reduce it ,but can not eliminate from society.
